With more than four decades devoted to heritage conservation architecture, Stephen brings to Circa a rare depth of knowledge, craftsmanship and care. His career has been shaped by a lifelong reverence for the stories held within traditional buildings — their materials, their makers and the moments in history they quietly preserve.

Originally trained at UNSW, Stephen’s early years were steeped in an appreciation for Australia’s architectural lineage: the details, proportions and finishes that reveal how people lived, worked and expressed themselves through place. This foundation evolved into a distinguished career working across significant ecclesiastical, civic and private heritage sites throughout New South Wales and Tasmania.

Stephen’s move to Tasmania in 2018 was driven by his love of hands-on conservation work and the rich tapestry of landscapes and built form the island offers. He continues to serve as a trusted heritage advisor to several councils, drawing on decades of experience diagnosing building conditions, guiding sensitive restoration, and communicating the unique qualities of heritage places with clarity and respect.

Alongside his architectural practice, Stephen has long held an interest in adaptive reuse, traditional building stewardship and thoughtful property development. Having owned and managed heritage-listed homes himself, he understands intimately the responsibilities — and the joys — of custodianship.

At Circa, Stephen brings a considered, technical and deeply human approach to heritage and lifestyle property. He has an extraordinary ability to “read” a place — its fabric, its spirit, its potential — and to support owners in presenting their homes with authenticity. His warmth, curiosity and genuine connection with people make him a trusted guide for both vendors and purchasers.

Rooted in Tasmania yet shaped by experience across Australia and abroad, Stephen embodies the qualities that sit at the heart of Circa: integrity, discernment, and a quiet passion for helping others find their own place within a rich and meaningful landscape.
